    Green Tourism Award - Bronze

Over six centuries the stones of Alloa Tower, the ancestral home of the Earls of Mar, have played host to many of Scotland’s monarchs. According to legend, Mary, Queen of Scots was reconciled with Darnley here. Another tradition holds that Mary’s infant son, later James VI and I, died at birth and was replaced by the Earl of Mar’s baby son.

Since the 14th century the tower, the largest surviving keep in Scotland, has seen a number of alterations, but you can still see the medieval dungeon and magnificent oak roof beams. A sweeping Italian-style staircase was added in the early 1700s. Antique lovers will appreciate the collection of portraits and silver on loan from the present Earl of Mar and Kellie.
