Regional Information

Royal Deeside weaves along the valley of the River Dee, overlapping the Cairngorms National Park and Aberdeenshire. It is an area rich in history and lush with rare wildlife, from alpine flora to Scottish wildcats and unusual birdlife. Its most famous admirer, Queen Victoria, purchased the Balmoral Estate in 1848, and the region's royal connections continue to this day. The area is beloved of the current Royal Family,and the Queen along with Princes William and Harry are regular visitors to Balmoral and to Ballater's Crathie Kirk.

Stretching from the floor of the Dee high into the Cairngorm Mountains, Royal Deeside encompasses a range of terrains and habitants, and is renowned for its splendid regal scenery. Through the seasons the colours change from gleaming white winter snow to the opulence of summer and autumn - deep green trees and purple heather. There is plenty for outdoor enthusiasts to do, with winter sports available at Glenshee and Aviemore, while Braemar Castle and Balmoral Estate will fascinate lovers of history.

This delightful semi-detached 18th-century cottage offers cosy and comfortable accommodation for guests requiring a peaceful environment in which to relax. Throughout, great care has been taken to retain a traditional feel with a charming mix of antique pieces and country-style furnishings. The front of the cottage offers lovely views down to Craigievar Castle, whilst to the back there is a small garden where guests can enjoy watching a wide variety of birdlife throughout the year. There is also a small lawn to the front (not enclosed) and access to a drying green at the rear.

North Mains sleeps 4. Accommodation comprises: Ground floor: L-shaped sitting room with dining area and wood-burning stove; modern and well-equipped kitchen; and compact bathroom with shower over bath. First floor: two twin bedrooms. Services : central heating - wet system with steel panel radiators fired by an electric boiler.

A small parking area is available beside the cottage.

Visitors may also be interested to know that additional accommodation for 4 guests can be booked at nearby Steading Cottage. One of a group of houses and outbuildings, this cottage has an attractive outlook facing the castle, and is built around a small cobbled courtyard.

This holiday accommodation is available for winter and festive breaks. However, the access road to the castle may become impassable in heavy snow. Although this happens infrequently, in the event of this curtailing your holiday we will refund any days of the holiday that were not used.

About the property:

Having stood for nearly four centuries, Craigievar Castle has recently undergone some major conservation work. It has been re-harled in a lime-based coating, which will help to protect the stonework against water ingress and retention. Repairs have also been made to the roof and chimneys. Work on the castle continues apace and it is due to re-open in the spring of 2010. Please check the Trust's main website (www.nts.org.uk) or ring the castle for updated information.

This fairytale castle, a fine example of Scottish Baronial architecture, seems to have grown naturally out of the rolling hills. The great tower stands just as it did when completed in 1626. Inside is a fine collection of family portraits.

Our two cottages stand in the grounds of this magnificent tower-house with its intriguing turrets. A delightful woodland walk gives extensive views over the surrounding 90 acres, also in the Trust's ownership. Craigievar Castle lies between the rivers Dee and Don and is ideally situated for touring. 6 miles away is Alford which offers a range of attractions including a swimming pool, golf club, heritage centre, dry ski slope, transport and railway museums. There are also shops and places to eat out. Craigievar Castle is approximately a 40-minute drive from the city of Aberdeen.
