  Garden Styles and Themes
Almost every style of Scottish garden history is represented in the Trust`s portfolio - from medieval to twentieth-century developments. The gardens also range enormously in their size, location and the types of plants grown, giving each one its own unique character and set of attractions.

Each garden may contain lots of different styles and landscapes and include a wide selection of different garden themes for example rose gardens, herbaceous borders, orchards and extensive country parks. This section will look at examples of the different styles which exist in NTS gardens.

Some examples of historical types are:

  • The reconstructed 16th-century garden at Culross Palace
  • The 18th-century Picturesque landscape at Culzean
  • Victorian formality at Haddo and House of Dun
  • Modern creations in older settings such as Falkland Palace, Inveresk Lodge and Priorwood

NTS Garden Acquisition Timeline
2005 was the 60th Anniversary of the Trust`s first garden acquisitions. The Garden Acquisition Timeline chronicles the purchase of the Trust`s various gardens.
