James Macpherson and the impact of Ossian
Culloden
Saturday 8 October 2016
A talk on the influence on the Highlands of this 18th-century writer from Strathspey
by
Dr Kristin Lindfield-Ott
... (View Full Details)
It can be argued that James Macpherson, born at Ruthven near Kingussie, kick-started our tourist industry in 1760 when he published Fragments of Ancient Poetry Collected in the Highlands of Scotland. This book was an instant success and went on to have a great impact throughout Europe. Napoleon is reputed to have kept a copy for bedside reading. Macpherson published other successful works but was soon at the centre of a controversy over how authentic his supposedly ancient poetry was.

Dr Lindfield-Ott is the Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) Literature and BA (Hons) History & Literature at the University of the Highlands and Islands. As well as writing a book on Macpherson, she set up the Macpherson’s Ossianic Legacy community project, and is also the organiser of Meet the Books, in collaboration with High Life Highland.
