The Finlayson Map (illustrated above)
This map was produced shortly after the battle, by a Jacobite sympathizer,
John Finlayson. It can be compared with the modern map of the battlefield
and with the Battle engraving.
Pupils can try and identify the following:
- The Government camp at Nairn
- The route of the Jacobite Night March
- The route taken by the Government from Nairn to Culloden
- The Government supply ships in the bay
- The lines of the two armies
- The positions of buildings
- Clues that Finlayson was a Jacobite – drooping thistles etc
This map is reproduced by kind permission of the National
