A
Highland soldier
This drawing comes from a book published in 1757, called Major George
Grant’s Highland Military Discipline, which includes many pictures
of Highland soldiers in the services of the British Army. Although published
after Culloden, the images are still a good source of evidence showing
the uniform and weapons of Highland soldiers. It is notable that following
the ban after Culloden, the British Army was the only place where it was
permitted to wear tartan – a move designed to attract Highland recruits.
Pupils can:
- See if they can work out whether he is on the Jacobite
or Government - side – the GR with the crown on his bag is a clue
- Identify the number and type of his weapons
- Discuss how practical his uniform would have been
- Compare this soldier with soldiers on the Jacobite side
