Battle
engraving
This vivid portrayal of the battle was engraved by Luke Sullivan (c1725-71)
in 1747. It was then later re-published by Laurie and Whittle fifty years
later in 1797. This picture is reproduced on a large scale in the Visitor
Centre. It is reproduced here by kind permission of the Trustees of the
National Museums, Scotland www.nms.ac.uk
The picture is lively and detailed and shows many of
the events of the battle, all happening simultaneously. Pupils can try
and identify the following incidents or people, perhaps labeling them
via an interactive whiteboard, or on printouts:
- The Jacobite cannonade
- The breaking down of the wall at Culwhiniac
- The Highland charge
- Hand to hand fighting
- Government bayonets
- Jacobite swords and targes
- Government supply ships in the Moray Firth<
- The Jacobite retreat and pursuit by Government cavalry Inverness
- The old Culloden house, now demolished
Pupils can also discuss the following:
- How reliable a source of evidence is a painting like
this? Was it likely to have been painted at - the time?
- Does the painting show evidence of bias at all?
