Learning at Culloden

This resource is designed for teachers and their classes who are planning to visit Culloden battlefield. It is designed chiefly for teachers of pupils in upper primary/lower secondary classes and has been written with the aspirations of the Curriculum for Excellence in mind.

The resource consists of the following elements:

  • Culloden and the Curriculum for Excellence - links to the Curriculum for Excellence

  • Booking a visit - information on the practicalities of your visit: booking costs, facitlities, risk assessment

  • Pre-visit teaching materials - material to prepare your class for their visit

  • Using the Visitor Centre - an overview of the content of the Visitor Centre and suggestions for pupil activities focusing on key exhibits

  • Investigating the battlefield - a suggested tour of the battlefield with points for discussion and suggestions for activities on site

  • After the visit - suggestions for consolidating learning on site and for developing next steps

  • Resource bank - a bank of images, and contemporary accountsw with notes for teachers to enhance classroom and fieldwork

  • Other resources - suggestions for relevant books, websites and DVDs

  • Places to visit - suggestions of other sites connected to the Jacobites and the events of the ’45
