Other places to visit

There are many other places to visit in Scotland associated with the Jacobites and/or the events of 1745-46. Some of these places provide programmes for schools. Here is a selection.

Glenfinnan Monument and Visitor Centre

Site of the raising of the Jacobite standard. Monument and visitor centre with exhibition.

Killiecrankie Visitor Centre

The Visitor Centre tells the story of the natural history of the area and the story of the Battle of Killiecrankie, major event in the Jacobite rising of 1689.

Glencoe Visitor Centre

The Visitor Centre explains both the cultural and natural culture of the glen, with a section and film on the massacre and Jacobite connections.

Ruthven Barracks

Dramatic ruined infantry barracks dating from 1719. Captured and burnt by Jacobite army in 1746 and then the site of the army’s dispersal after Culloden.

Fort George

Massive army base constructed in the years after Culloden. Historic barrack rooms showing domestic life of Government soldier. Still a working army base. Programmes for schools available.

Callendar House

National Museum of Scotland

Edinburgh Castle

Though the Jacobites occupied Edinburgh, the Castle remained in Government hands.
