If pupils have carried out some of the map-based suggestions
relating to the battlefield before their visit, it is hoped that they
will already be familiar with the basic shape and layout of the battlefield.
There are marked paths around the battlefield giving
a range of options for routes, depending on the weather, the time available
and the mobility of your class.
Key features to note on the battlefield are:
- Red flags, indicating the front line of the Government
army
- Blue flags, indicating an approximate position of the Jacobites
- 7 Pathway Panels - interpretation panels around the site providing information
on events of the battle and what you can see today
- 2 Viewing platforms – one on the roof of the new centre, the other
on the battlefield, each with an interpretation panel
- The Forbes Memorial cairn
- The clan markers – stones commemorating the dead on the Jacobite
side
- The house at Leanach – a reconstructed cottage on the site of buildings
there at the time of the battle
