Culloden - Learning

Cross-curricular projects and studies

The Curriculum for Excellence actively promotes learning beyond subject boundaries. A visit to Culloden offers obvious learning opportunities across many curricular areas in addition to Social Subjects. Key areas are as follows:

Languages – both English and Gaelic
Pupils will read and write, talk and listen as they find out about Culloden and express what they have learnt. Activities on site will promote listening and talking in groups. There are opportunities for reading and discussing a wide range of texts and for producing functional, personal and imaginative writing for a range of audiences. Gaelic speakers and learners will benefit from the integration of Gaelic into the exhibition and from its exploration of Gaelic culture.

Expressive Arts
Culloden is a sombre site. Many visitors have strong reactions to the battlefield which may be expressed and explored through art and design, music, dance or drama. Some schools may use their visit to Culloden as a springboard for exploring the traditional music of Gaelic and Scots.

Cross-curricular work
Cross-currricular themes such as Cause and Conflict may be explored through a visit to the site which offers opportunities for learning across a range of subject areas:

  • Social Studies: people, past events and societies
  • Social Studies: people, place and environment
  • Science: Planet Earth – biodiversity
  • Expressive Arts – art and design
  • Expressive Arts – drama
  • Numeracy/Mathematics – Information handling

Please discuss this with our Learning staff.
