This programme deals with life in 18th century Britain and explores the lives of people that were impacted by the uprising. Students will investigate, compare and contextualise life at the time of the battle.
Activities include...
- Exploring historical characters and the social context of the rising (led by Culloden education staff)
- Looking at primary documents and role play to learn to learn about:
- Life as a solider in the Hanoverian army during the rising
- Life as a solider in the Jacobite army during the rising
- Life as a local person during the rising
- A worksheet that investigates the exhibition and prompts them to think critically about the impact of the battle
- The Immersion Theater to experience the feel of the battle
- A guided tour of the Battlefield focusing on the people involved in the battle and the aftermath (led by Culloden education staff)
Curriculum for excellence
These programmes are designed with the four capacities in mind. It is also intended to provide an enjoyable experience to the young people participating. Choosing to come to Culloden battlefield will add depth to your chosen topic.
Activities will encourage young people to:
- actively participate
- engage in critical thinking
- contextualize knowledge
- interpret evidence and explore primary sources
- compare and contrast societies
- compare aspects of peoples lives in the past with their own
- discover how past events or actions have shaped Scottish society
- to discuss the impact the battle had on the lives of people at that time
These programs were developed to complement level 3 and 4 in the Social studies (People, past events and societies) of the Curriculum for excellence - however it can be adapted to suit your needs.
