Culloden - Learning

Culloden Archaeologists to the Rescue!

Programme Description:
In this programme pupils will draw on multiple skills - drawing, numeracy, literacy, observation - to "excavate" Culloden Battlefield and find out how archaeology helped us learn about the battle. They will handle replica artefacts and recreate real-life archaeological research to understand how the battle unfolded on Culloden Moor. Using their findings, they will walk the battlefield from the Culwhiniac enclosure back to the Government line (weather permitting) to see how the finds tell the story of the battle. In the exhibition, pupils will see the actual artefacts from the battlefield and how these relate back to what it was like to be in the battle as a soldier. The programme is guided by a member of Culloden's Learning Team, except for the visit to sections of the exhibition which will be facilitated by the teachers using the exhibition notes provided. Duration: 2 hours. This programme does not include a tour of the clan graves and the Memorial Cairn.

  • Handling replica artefacts
  • Visit to the roof
