Conflict of Choice (2 hours 30min)

This programme investigates the morality of conflict and the current laws surrounding it.

Activities include:

  • Exploring International Humanitarian Law
  • Exploring the aftermath of Culloden
  • Breaking down stereotypes associated with the battle
  • Discussing key themes of 'too young to fight', 'forced to fight' and 'fleeing the fight'
  • Using a worksheet to investigate the exhibition which prompts them to think critically about the battle
  • The Immersion Theater to experience the feel of the battle
  • A tour of the battlefield that focuses on the stories of people on both sides of the conflict (led by education staff)
  • Contextualising the battle and comparing it to current conflicts

Curriculum for excellence

These programmes are designed with the four capacities in mind. It is also intended to provide an enjoyable experience to the young people participating. Choosing to come to Culloden battlefield will add depth to your chosen topic.

Activities will encourage young people to:

  • actively participate
  • engage in critical thinking
  • contextualize knowledge
  • interpret evidence and explore primary sources
  • compare and contrast societies
  • compare aspects of peoples lives in the past with their own
  • discover how past events or actions have shaped Scottish society
  • to discuss the impact the battle had on the lives of people at that time

These programs were developed to complement level 3 and 4 in the Social studies (People, past events and societies) of the Curriculum for excellence - however it can be adapted to suit your needs.

Cost: £1.50 for educational members £3.00 per student for non members
