The Hunt for the Appin Banner (1½ hours)

This interactive and exciting program is designed to give younger visitors a window into life during the uprising. Activities include:

  • An interactive storytelling session that explores the story of Hairy Donald and the Appin Banner
  • Learning about the social context of the 1745 Jacobite uprising
  • A worksheet that investigates the exhibition and prompts them to think critically about the people involved in the battle
  • A guided tour of the Battlefield that explores the events of the day and focuses on the people involved in the battle

Curriculum for excellence
This program is designed with the 4 capacities in mind. It is also intended to provide an enjoyable experience to the young people participating. Choosing to come to Culloden battlefield adds depth to your chosen topic.

Activities will encourage young people to:

  • actively participate
  • engage in critical thinking
  • contextualize knowledge
  • use evidence to recreate the story of a place or individual of local historical interest
  • compare aspects of people's daily lives in the past with their own by using historical evidence or the experience of recreating an historical setting
  • compare and contrast societies
  • compare aspects of peoples lives in the past with their own
  • discover how past events or actions have shaped Scottish society
  • To discuss the impact the Battle had on the lives of people at that time

This program was developed to complement level 1 in the Social studies (People, past events and societies) of the Curriculum for excellence - however it can be adapted to suit your needs.

Cost: £1.50 for educational members £3.00 per child for non members
