After our departure from Malaga we will make a short evening call to the Rock of Gibraltar, which is steeped in history evolving from its strategic location at the southernmost tip of the Iberian peninsula, where Europe meets Africa. After a day at sea we will arrive at Porto. The city is, of course, best known for its famous port wine, and on the hillsides along the River Douro you will see the vineyards where the wine is produced. Our next port is A Coruña. From here the marvellous town of Santiago de Compostela is within easy reach, and we will visit the city and its cathedral, a fantastic Baroque pyramid of granite flanked by immense bell towers. Following a day at sea, we will call at the French port of Nantes in the Loire valley. Its history is closely bound up with Breton fortunes, and it achieved great wealth from colonial expeditions and shipbuilding. Twenty-three miles south-west of Land’s End lie the Scilly Isles, where we will visit Tresco and tour the world-famous Abbey Gardens, begun in 1834 and designed around a medieval Benedictine priory. Our final call will be to Portland Port, lying in the sweep of Weymouth Bay amidst a stunning coastline of outstanding panoramic views of the Dorset World Heritage coast.

Lecturers will include horticulturalist and curator of Tresco Abbey Gardens Mike Nelhams and art historian Margaret Campbell.
