Scotland is
internationally famous for its spectacular natural landscapes,
its clean, unspoiled environment and its rich populations of wildlife.
Many of the best examples of these are under the care of the National Trust for Scotland.
The following pages give a taste of the extent
and variety of these natural riches, from the underlying foundations
of the geology, on which the landscape is built, to the profusion
of wildlife and the natural habitats in which they live.
A particular feature of Scotland is its highly
complex coastline and islands, of which the Trust owns an outstanding
share. The seas around these coasts are some of the richest in
Europe and these, too, form part of our natural heritage.
